Volunteers from our M6 ROM team partnered with Heidelberg to upgrade Lockerbie Ice Rink’s car park and footpath, helping the beloved community hub recover from the impact of rising energy costs.
Members of our M6 ROM team recently volunteered at Lockerbie Ice Rink, a community facility that has been hit especially hard by rising energy costs. Known as the "Home of Champions," the rink has produced world and European curling champions, including British 2014 Winter Olympic medallists.
For over 30 years, the rink has evolved into more than just a sports venue, acting as a community hub for locals and hosting diverse groups from across the area. However, despite its efforts to improve energy efficiency, the skyrocketing cost of energy—combined with the high consumption levels required to operate the facility—has left little funding available for essential maintenance.
One key area that has suffered is the rink's car park, which has fallen into disrepair, creating trip hazards and making it difficult for wheelchair users to navigate. In response, our M6 ROM team, alongside surfacing subcontractor Heidelberg, stepped in to upgrade the car park and resurface a nearby footpath.
Our Managing Director of Transport, Vip Gandhi, contributed by sweeping and clearing rubble on-site.
Vip also seized the opportunity to present Office Manager, Fiona Green, with an award for her work organising and supporting Maggie's fundraising efforts. Additionally, wellbeing tables were set up during the event to offer information on various support networks and charities and details on groups that could benefit from further volunteering efforts.
By using their volunteering days, the team improved a vital community facility and strengthened our commitment to supporting local causes.
