National Apprenticeship Week with Shaun Tye and Jack Clarke
09 Feb 2024Join us this National Apprenticeship Week as we explore apprenticeships at Sir Robert McAlpine with Shaun Tye and Jack Clarke, Civil Engineer Apprentices.
In support of National Apprenticeship week, we caught up with Assistant Estimator, Alex O'Shea, who shares more about his progress since completing his apprenticeship.
Alex has been with Sir Robert McAlpine for four years, originally starting out as an Apprentice Construction Estimator while completing his first degree in Quantity Surveying. He now works as an Assistant Estimator and is completing his second degree in Commercial Management.
Alex joined Sir Robert McAlpine after completing his A Levels. For him, thinking about the cost implications of design and being part of a build from the floor up were his motivators for joining as an apprentice.
In his own words, becoming an apprentice has been advantageous in many ways. He has received on the job experience and training and had the opportunity to work with talented experts from across the industry.
Over the last four years he’s worked across a variety of sectors including heritage, commercial and infrastructure where he’s been involved in tendering, value engineering and cost planning.
So, what’s next for Alex? In the coming months, he’s focused on continuing with estimating while he finishes his degree.
To hear more from Alex including his advice to those considering an apprenticeship in construction, head over to Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook to watch his video.
